CALA attends the NQAPIA National Conference in Chicago, IL!

Nebula Li attended the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) conference August 7-9, 2015 to present a Community Legal Education event by being on a panel about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) economic security, and also to publicize CALA and CALA's three clinics. The panel was named "Building Movements for LGBTQ Economic Security."

The Movement Advancement Project (MAP) opened with troubling statistics about LGBTQ folks - including the fact that  75-82% of LGBTQ Asian/Pacific Islander folks have been discriminated at work.  (link)

MAP wanted to showcase how LGBTQ folks are affected by economic insecurity in different ways, and so brought together panelists from three areas not traditionally thought of as LGBTQ fields.

Nebula Li, Joy Messinger, and VI Ray-Mazumder were the three panelists on "Building Movements for LGBTQ Economic Security."

The panel kicked off with Joy Messinger, a nationally-renowned expert in sex education and reproductive justice, speaking about the local history of activists in Chicago, and access to healthcare being a truly queer and trans issue rather than simply an issue for cisgender women, and one that also includes access to safety from police violence.

Next, Vi Ray-Mazumder, Manager of Youth Programs at Asian Americans Advancing Justice, spoke about the issues affecting youth, such as budget cuts in Illinois, and how they affected limited English-proficient students.

Nebula spoke about the expense of immigration, which puts poor individuals at a disadvantage - from the application costs, difficulty in obtaining fee waivers, to the lack of a free government-provided immigration attorney.  Nebula also spoke about how racial profiling and also "walking while trans" can lead to several LGBTQ folks of color, but especially trans woman of color, to be stopped by police and how a casual encounter can have very serious immigration consequences even when the individual stopped has not committed any crime.

CALA stands with Enlace Chicago at the July 1st Walk Out/Rally for Fair Budget and Revenue!

On July 1, CALA's staff and interns rallied outside of the Thompson Center with Enlace Chicago to protest unjust cuts to the state's budget.

Two clients who were active in civil disobedience in their home countries joined staff and interns from the Enlace Community Activism Law Clinic! Clients stood up for residents of "La Villita," which means Little Village in Spanish.

At the Clinic, we are proud to provide clients with more than legal services, but also opportunities to get involved in making change in their communities. CALA supports the activism and movement for change done by Enlace Chicago.
