Matthew A. Simmons is Assistant General Counsel at the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, an Illinois municipal corporation that owns McCormick Place and Navy Pier. Matt focuses his practice on transactional matters related to finance, construction, sports law and real estate. Matt also specializes in legislative drafting and interpretation. In addition, Matt counsels MPEA staff with respect to the legal implications of MPEA policy matters and business decisions.
Prior to joining MPEA in 2015, Matt worked at Mayer Brown LLP as an associate in the Government Relations practice group. At Mayer Brown, Matt represented government entities and private companies in connection with municipal bond issuances, loan agreements, transportation infrastructure projects and sports law matters. Matt also represented religious organizations and non-profit corporations pro bono on various transactional and corporate matters. Before joining Mayer Brown, Matt spent the first year of his career writing legislation in the City of Chicago Law Department.
Matt received his B.A. in political science and sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006 and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2009. Matt gained experience with community activism lawyering in law school, working in tandem with community organizers on housing issues in Boston.
