Trigger Warning: domestic violence

Family law cases can be difficult to navigate because they are deeply personal, but everyone has a breaking point, and Nahla had finally reached hers. When Nahla got married in 2019, she had no way of knowing what was to come. Her husband devolved right before her eyes into what she described as a “satanic” character, becoming violent and manipulative. Since Nahla had two children from a previous marriage, she not only feared for her life, but she feared for theirs, as well. Nahla’s husband promised that they would get green cards as a family, but shortly after visiting a lawyer to begin the process, she found out he had terminated it. Nahla viewed this as a betrayal because they were already living in US, and now at risk.

In October 2020, things escalated when Nahla’s husband hit her, and she caught it on video. She knew she had to get out, so she asked a judge for a protective order, but she was denied one. It was then, when her lawyer, whom she could no longer afford to pay, referred her to Beyond. Nahla said the process from this point on was simple. Her Beyond attorney, Michael Drake, was respectful and he always took the time to reassure and support her throughout the entire case. Beyond first helped Nahla get the protective order, and then finally, after two years of fighting, Nahla was free when her divorce was finalized. Nahla described this moment as “an instant relief.”

Now, Nahla said she, her 9-year-old son, and 13-year-old daughter are all quite happy. They feel free now that it’s over and feel as though a weight has been lifted from their shoulders. Nahla said, “being married to my ex-husband was a nightmare and I’m thrilled for the process to be behind us. During this stressful period, I discovered my strength. I was desperately looking for help in any capacity and I found Beyond by coincidence – a happy coincidence – that saved me. I wish Beyond nothing but success.” We see first-hand just how impactful legal aid is. Nahla fought for herself and her children. She persevered, survived, and worked hard with her attorneys to save herself and her family from abuse. We are very grateful for her happy coincidence and with your support and contributions, we hope to witness many more discoveries of strength. Donate at Beyond Legal Aid — Donate.
